Azor HCT (amlodipine, olmesartan, hydrochlorothiazide) is a treatment for hypertension in patients who need multiple medications to manage high blood pressure. Many users buy Azor HCT as its equivalent, Sevikar HCT.

This medication includes three active ingredients, which are:

• Amlodipine is a a calcium channel blocker that relaxes muscles in the heart and those that tighten and narrow blood vessels.
• Olmesartan is an angiotensin-2 receptor antagonist that blocks the naturally-occurring angiotensin II. Angiotensin II further encourages blood vessels to narrow and tighten; olmesartan does the opposite.
• Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic which works by encouraging the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body, passed out in urine.

Each of the above can be used individually to manage high blood pressure but which produce more powerful---and convenient---results when combined in a single tablet. Managing Hypertension

Patients prescribed Azor HCT are usually advised to make lifestyle changes in addition to taking the medication. Lifestyle changes are the only way to end dependency on medication to keep blood pressure low and prevent risk of numerous side effects, including stroke and heart attack. The prescribing doctor may advise exercise, stopping smoking, controlling cholesterol, and other changes. Rarely patients who are in otherwise great health have high blood pressure, in which case changes make little difference.

If lifestyle changes are not made or not sufficient to control hypertension, patients will be on medications to control it for the remainder of life.

Luckily Azor HCT can be taken long-term, indefinitely if need be. Azor HCT comes in tablets, taken once per day. Tablets should be swallowed whole, with or without food. A glass of fluid is recommended.

Patients are started on lower doses, which may be increased if needed. It takes about two weeks for full benefit to be seen; dosage adjustments should be made after at least a week---preferably two---after starting treatment or following the most recent adjustment.

Adverse Effects

Side effects from Azor HCT are relatively rare, but do happen. Most commonly reported are:

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Flushing
• Hair loss
• Mild rash or itching

The diuretic in Azor HCT can influence electrolyte levels, particularly potassium in the blood. These levels may need to be monitored.

More rarely serious side effects develop, which call for medical attention:

• Passing out
• Pounding or fluttering heartbeat
• Rapid weight gain
• Edema in hands or feet
• Urinating less than usual
• Jaundice

Patients who buy Azor HCT should be aware that, though very rare, the medication can cause a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, which can ultimately lead to kidney failure. Patients should be alert for muscle tenderness, pain, or weakness, particularly if unexplained and accompanied by fever and dark-colored urine. If this happens, seek medical attention.

Effects of Azor HCT on unborn or nursing babies are unclear; women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should speak with a doctor.
